Sleepless Nights (Letting Go)

all goes well

for awhile

all goes well

and i live one day at a time
ignoring the pain in my heart
when i realize that i no longer can recall
the sound of your voice

all goes well
until i find another sleepless night
where the scar of the long distant wound
of your face is glued
to my wide sleepless eyes

if only i could see you
one more time
to ask why it was you and not me
who chiseled the tears
on the face of the old man
with his back bent by the sorrows of his years
and the question mark of how did he fail you

if only i could see you
one last time
to say the good-bye that would lessen
the discomfort of this uneasy truce
in my soul, the good-bye
that brothers never seem to mention
until it is too late to make such amends

for i now realize

all will finally go well
when they pry your memory
from my dead and sleepless fingers
